Seasonal Pittsburgh Flower Spotlight: Dahlia

In this series of blog posts, we’re featuring locally grown flowers in the Pittsburgh and Bethel Park regions that thrive during a certain season! This month, we’re looking at dahlia arrangements. Dahlias are one of the most popular late summer/early autumn flowers for a number of reasons. Let’s get into what makes them great!

What are dahlias?

Dahlias are perennial flowers grown from a tuber that originated in Central America. There are hundreds of known varieties that come in several sizes. They have a leafy stem and often a tufted, rounded flower head with multiple petals. Because dahlias grow from a tuber (which is edible), they were originally classified as a vegetable!

Dahlias are perfect flowers for bouquets as they can be quite impactful to look at and come in a variety of colors (except for blue). When used in locally grown flower arrangements, they are very elegant and truly show-stopping.

What do dahlias symbolize?

Dahlias are common in weddings as during the Victorian era, they were connected to an everlasting union and true commitment. Dahlia arrangements can also symbolize creativity, making them an excellent gift.

When are dahlias in season in Pennsylvania?

Most dahlias begin blooming in July, with the most robust time being August and September. When daylight begins to diminish in October, they begin to fade out.

Dahlias stop blooming at the first frost of the year (typically in late October). At Redolent, we feature dahlias in our bouquets as often as possible, throughout their entire growing season.

Are dahlias easy to grow in Pittsburgh?

Yes, dahlias are common in our region! With harsh winter weather, it is common for growers to dig up tubers at the end of each season, to avoid extreme temperature changes.

Planting dahlia roots deeply underground is one way to avoid this, though many gardeners like to play it safe and store dahlias in a cool, dry place to overwinter.

Because dahlias are cold-sensitive, it’s wise to wait to plant until the final frost time.

The Benefits of Choosing Locally Grown Dahlia Arrangements

While extremely beautiful, dahlias are a difficult flower to ship as they are delicate once bloomed. They also do not last incredibly long. When purchasing a Pittsburgh-grown flower arrangement, you know that the flowers you’re receiving will have a much longer vase life.

Because locally grown flowers can be more easily transported (over fewer miles), they are also better for the environment.

Finally, a locally sourced dahlia arrangement means you have access to flowers that simply are not available in traditional florist bouquets.

How to Make Dahlias Last Longer in a Vase

When picked at the proper time, dahlias can last 5-7 days after harvest. To check the health of your flowers, review them to ensure the petals are lush and firm (not papery or shriveled).

To make them last as long as possible, change the vase water daily and trim stems back every couple of days, to encourage fresh uptake of water.

Finally, we always recommend using a flower preservative when placing your dahlia arrangement in clean water. Here are more tips for extending flower vase life.
